A Weekend in Rotorua

Thinking of planning a weekend away in Rotorua with your loved one or family? Here’s our suggested two day itinerary so you can get the most out of your visit. Remember whilst staying with us that our staff are also happy to make recommendations or help book activities or dinner on your behalf.

Rotorua is best known for its tri-factor of attractions: geothermal landscapes, traditional Maori culture, and adrenalin adventure activities. These are absolute must-dos and we have incorporate all three for you in the below!

Day One

Start your morning with breakfast at Urbano Bistro, popular with locals and visitors alike and conveniently located round the corner from our motel.

Once fuelled-up, get acquainted with the region’s geothermal wonders with a visit to Wai-O-Tapu or Orakei Korako, both amazing thermal parks about a 20 minute drive from Rotorua. We recommend getting to Wai-O-Tapu (meaning “sacred waters”) in time for the daily eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser at 10.15am – it can reach 20 metres high!

Alternatively, Te Puia is another great place to see mud pools and geysers and is situated in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, just 20 minutes’ walk from the motel. It is also home NZ’s Maori Arts and Crafts Centre where you can observe traditional carving and weaving. The café is a great choice for lunch.

For the afternoon, Rainbow Springs is a popular local attraction, including their highly successful kiwi conservation centre. We highly recommend a visit especially if you are travelling with children. Other options include the iconic Rotorua Museum, Agrodome (featuring a farm show – touristy but fun), a relaxed lake cruise, or a dip in one of the region’s many natural hot pools such as Kerosene Creek.

In the evening, we highly recommend you experience the traditional Maori culture with a visit to Tamaki or Mitai Maori Village. This includes a traditional welcome, haka performance and delicious hangi feast (where the food is cooking in unground ovens). A free transfer from your accommodation is included, and you should arrive back to the motel by 9.30pm.

Day Two

How about taking advantage of our own in-room breakfast service today?

Spend your second morning getting a large dose of adventure. There’s white water rafting down the world’s highest commercial rafted waterfall, zip-lining through native forest, jet boating, zorbing (a kiwi invention where you roll down a hill in a giant ball), luging, or mountain bike tracks for all abilities at Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest.

If all of the above sounds a little extreme, Rotorua has plenty of great walking options, including the 5km beautiful Blue Lake Track which is about a 2 hour return. Ask our staff at reception for other suggestions.

Reward your efforts with a relaxing afternoon soak in a mineral pool at the Polynesian Spa. If you’re staying another night, we recommend dinner along Rotorua’s Eat Street (having recently undergone a $2m upgrade) or treat yourself to a buffet in the Stratosphere Restaurant at the top of the gondola.

Fancy staying longer? It’s very easy to fill a few more days or even a week in Rotorua!
